A class on how the sun affects skin, sunscreen ingredients and the signs of skin cancer is set for next Monday.

The class is set from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Serenity Zone Skin Spa, 310-1/2 Broad St. in Nevada City.

Class size is limited. The fee is $30 per person and will be donated to the Melanoma Research Foundation. For more information, call the spa at 277-1008.

Historical Society names top citizens

The Nevada County Historical Society recently presented its annual Citizen of the Year awards.

One went to Gary Plunkett, district manager of the Nevada Cemetery District, for his work in preservation of the 21 historic cemeteries in Nevada County. The second went to Verne Taylor, director of the Nevada City Department of Public Works, for his devotion to Nevada City history and community service projects.
