A 380-acre controlled burn lit Tuesday near Englebright Lake was expected to be extinguished today by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Battalion Chief Sean Griffis of the Nevada-Placer-Yuba CDF unit said the plot between the lake and the Dobbins area, “is part of a large fuels reduction effort we’re making in the Yuba River Canyon.”

Griffis said fire crews will stay with the burn throughout today to make sure it does not escape.

Cub Scouts to collect food

Cub Scouts will be hosting a food drive on between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday in front of the S.P.D. Market on Zion Street in Nevada City, said Mitch Yantis, a volunteer with the Cub Scout pack.

The scouts of Pack 23 will be asking shoppers to contribute nonperishable food to the Interfaith Food Ministry in Grass Valley, which provides grocery sacks of staples to needy families in the area.
