Niel Locke was confirmed as a Nevada City city clerk write-in candidate for the June 6 election, incumbent city clerk Cathy Wilcox-Barnes said Tuesday.

Locke, who is not running to retain his elected position as Nevada City treasurer, said Friday he decided to seek the clerk position because the two other candidates, Wilcox-Barnes and local attorney Yolanda Bachtell, had turned the race into a “mockery.”

Wilcox-Barnes, who was placed on paid administrative leave from her full-time position of Nevada City office operations supervisor on April 25, has since sworn in Bachtell as deputy city clerk. Contention over who should be keeping minutes and making records available to the public has peppered Nevada City council meetings since Wilcox-Barnes was placed on leave from her office supervisor position.

The city clerk position, which pays $100 per month, is responsible for keeping minutes of council meetings, making public records available and conducting elections.

SYRCL starts

river cleanup

Last year, the South Yuba River Citizens League piloted a summer cleanup program to decrease the amount of trash in the river. The season-long program at Edwards Crossing was so successful that the organization has decided to enlarge it this summer to include two more sites.

Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, SYRCL volunteers will pick up trash and recyclables each weekend at Edward’s, Purdon and the Highway 49 crossings on the river outside Nevada City. The program will also have recycling, with Nevada County providing the bins.
