The Bureau of Land Management grazing fee for 2006 will be $1.56 per animal unit month, effective March 1, down 15 percent from the 2005 rate of $1.79.

An AUM fee is based on a BLM formula using a 1966 base value of $1.23 and cannot exceed or decrease the prior year’s fee by 25 percent. An AUM is the amount of forage needed per month for one cow and her calf, a horse, five sheep or goats.

The figure is adjusted yearly to figure in current private grazing land lease rates, cattle prices and livestock production costs. The fee will apply to 16 western states, including California, for 18,000 BLM and 8,000 U.S. Forest Service grazing permits. The national grassland fee in the East and the Midwest is $1.73 per AUM. For more information, call the BLM at (202) 452-5137 or the Forest Service at (202) 205-0914.
