BriarPatch construction starts today

Nevada County’s first private, commercial building to be certified in the use of sustainable building materials will start construction today on a hill in Grass Valley.

The new BriarPatch Co-op is scheduled to open in a year in a 13,000-square-foot building at the roundabout on Sierra College Drive.

About 100 co-op supporters gathered for a ground-breaking ceremony Tuesday.

The plans for the store have been certified by the United States Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program. The nonprofit construction industry coalition promotes the use of building methods and materials that are both profitable and environmentally sound.

Construction will include fixtures and landscaping that reduce water and electricity consumption. Many materials have recycled content, are sourced regionally, sustainably harvested or emit small amounts of toxic gases.
