Breaking News: One killed, one arrested in shooting

One man died and another was injured and expected to be arrested Thursday after a double shooting at a Big Oak Valley home west of Penn Valley, according to the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office.

Gene McFarland, 65, died in his home on Shepard Road. Injured was Frank Firefeather, who was either McFarland’s son or step-son, Sgt. Ron Smith said. Smith said Firefeather would be treated for “superficial” wounds at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital and booked into the Wayne Brown Correctional Facility.

Two handguns were found at the scene, and one had a laser scope, Smith said.

The state Department of Justice investigators were called in to examine and document evidence at the scene.
