Body found in lake may soon be identified

Investigators believe they’re close to putting a name to the body found in Rollins Lake last month.

Dental records with the state Department of Justice are a near match with teeth of the male body found floating near Orchard Springs Campground on Oct. 18, according to Nevada County Sheriff’s Sgt. Ron Smith.

“The odds are it’ll match. I have high hopes, but we’ll see,” he said.

The possible break came when the DOJ’s missing persons unit called the Sheriff’s Office, which in turn called a Sacramento odontologist, or a tooth expert.

Except for one tooth, the dead man’s teeth are a match between the DOJ’s chart of the man’s teeth and an X-ray of the man’s teeth, Smith said. The chart, which is newer than the X-ray, shows a cap on the tooth; the X ray shows a cavity in the tooth.

All that possibly waits, Smith said, is the odontologist’s examination of the man’s jaw bone, which has been with anthropologist P. Wiley, who works at California State University, Chico, and regularly assists the Sheriff’s Office.

Late last month, investigators pursued a lead that the man might have been a Mexican in the United States illegally, but the dental records didn’t match.

Meanwhile, the man’s cause of death remains unknown. He’s described as 5-feet-11, 150 pounds with black hair, brown eyes and wearing dark clothes – corduroy pants, T-shirt and jacket – and white shoes.
