Boat wreck kills 2

An Auburn man has been arrested on two counts of vehicular manslaughter after he crashed a motorboat he was driving into another boat on Lake Englebright Saturday night, killing two people.

Jeffrey Sandow, 53, allegedly was driving his boat with two passengers on board when he crashed into the second boat at about 6:30 p.m., said Yuba County Sheriff’s Lt. Damon Gil.

The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office dive team participated in a search for possible victims, as did the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Gil said.

The boat that was struck had three people on board, two of whom were pronounced dead at the scene, Gil said. The third person on that boat was transported by helicopter to Sutter Roseville Medical Center.

One of Sandow’s passengers was taken by ambulance to Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital. Sandow and his other passenger were treated at the scene.

Sandow was arrested Sunday morning and remains in Yuba County jail in lieu of $100,000 bail. He allegedly was drunk at the time of the crash, according to a report in the Marysville Appeal-Democrat.

“I don’t have the actual nuts and bolts of what happened,” Gil said, adding that the incident remains under investigation.

“We did have boats on the water (Sunday), trying to recover both boats,” he said.

Gil had not released the identities of the victims as of press time Sunday.
