Blaze levels old miner’s cabin off New Bloomfield Road

A fire that was hard for officials to find leveled a vacant, old miner’s cabin near Nevada City early Wednesday.

“We got a call at 4:20 a.m. for a glow in the sky around the North Bloomfield and Cooper Road areas,” said Battalion Chief David Ray of Nevada County Consolidated Fire Protection District.

“It’s a remote area, and there are no residences in close proximity,” Ray said. “The phone calls were aways from the fire, and we didn’t have a location to respond to.”

Ray began talking on his radio with another firefighter who grew up in the area. Coupling the firefighters’ knowledge of the area with his own, Ray drove to a remote spot on the 12000 block of New Bloomfield Road, where he knew an old home stood.

“I drove up on the house to find the structure fully involved, and basically, on the ground,” Ray said. “It had been burning for a while.”

No one was in the cabin owned by a Southern California family, Ray said.

“It was a total loss and an uninsured structure,” Ray said. “It will be extremely difficult to come up with a cause due to the devastation.”

Assisting Consolidated at the fire were the Nevada City and Grass Valley fire departments, Ray added.
