Big 5 coming to area

Grass Valley’s newest major retailer will take the last remaining space in area shopping centers, said a real estate broker.

Big 5 Sporting Goods is coming to the Kmart Center near SPD Market. The projected opening date of the 10,000-square-foot store at 123 West McKnight Way is Oct. 12.

Ricki Heck, a commercial broker for Coldwell Banker/Grass Roots Realty, which represented the shopping center in leasing the Big 5 space, said the Grass Valley area now has no vacancies in anchored shopping centers.

While that indicates a thriving economy, it also means retail business can’t expand, said Heck.

“It is a change – a big change,” she said.

The Grass Valley Big 5 store will employ as many as 20 peoplen, said Rick Gridley, operations manager and director of marketing for Big 5 Sporting Goods, a publicly held company headquartered in El Segundo.

The company has 263 stores, including one in Auburn.

Though it doesn’t have a huge population, Grass Valley does have enough sports enthusiasts to make the full-line sporting goods store a go, said Gridley. With a nearby store in Auburn, it’s a natural move to put in a new store here.

“There’s a whole lot of sports enthusiasts, and we want to be their place for sporting goods,” said Gridley.

Big 5 is interviewing prospective employees Tuesday at the WorkForce Connection One-Stop Career Center. For information and applications, call 265-3204.
