Bells at St. Canice ring every hour

Nevada City residents frequenting the historic district can now get a sense of the time from the hourly peal of bells from St. Canice Church on Washington Street.

The Catholic Church installed a new music system last week that allows a variety of peals to ring out from the steeple every hour out of four loudspeakers, according to Ken Hayes, facilities supervisor at St. Canice Church and St. Patrick’s Church.

“In our equipment room (at the church), there’s a separate music system for the bells,” Hayes said. “It can do wedding bells, funeral bells, bells on the hour and bells for special occasions.”

The idea of ringing bells every hour came from Rev. Sylvester Kwaitkowski, pastor at both St. Canice and St. Patrick’s Churches.

“By ringing the bells, we can glorify God and it’s a reminder that He is above us, with us and in us,” he said. “The sound of bells affects our feelings. Their sound is divine and … it opens our personalities toward God.”
