Basketball backboard collapses, injuring five

Insurance investigators will try to find out why a retractable basketball backboard and hoop collapsed at Chicago Park School Tuesday, injuring four students and a part-time employee.

All four students were back at school Wednesday, and the employee who was flown by air ambulance to Sutter-Roseville Medical Center is in good condition, according to Superintendent-Principal Dan Zeisler. He would not release the names of those injured without their permission.

“It could have been much more severe,” Zeisler said. “A couple of kids were hanging on a support earlier and were told to jump down, and then it crashed” at about 1:45 p.m. onto the floor of the multipurpose room.

Zeisler said the students could not have weighed more than 200 pounds combined. The goal and backboard swing out from the wall for games in the multipurpose room, which doubles as a gym and assembly site.

“It even had support chains, but everything failed and that why it’s being investigated,” Zeisler said. The apparatus was removed from the building and the school’s insurance company will examine the situation.

Zeisler said the adult employee was flown to the hospital as a precaution for a head injury, but the person did not suffer a concussion. One student got a gash on his head that did not require stitches, and another was using crutches to nurse a bruised foot.

The superintendent said the irony of the situation is the school has a good chance to expand and make the multipurpose room into a full-sized gym with state funding.
