Bank robber bound for prison

The bank robber who stole $800 from the Placer Community Credit Union in Grass Valley in February has been sentenced in federal court to four years in state prison, U.S. Attorney officials said Wednesday.

Jim Brian Smith, 26, of Orangevale, was sentenced to 48 months in prison and will have to pay $10,850 in restitution to five Northern California banks, including the local credit union, United States Attorney spokesperson Rosemary Shaul said.

“The prosecution was quick and speedy,” Grass Valley Police Capt. Dave Remillard said Wednesday. “It’s nice to have this resolved.”

According to Assistant United States Attorney Michelle Rodriguez, in late 2006 and early 2007 Smith also robbed the Bank of Lodi in Plymouth, Washington Mutual Bank in Sacramento, Golden One Credit Union in Lincoln and the U.S. Bank in Roseville.

During all the robberies, Smith used demand notes and used his hand to simulate a gun in his pocket.

Smith was arrested by Roseville police, who recognized Smith’s gold getaway van and pulled him over Feb. 26.

He pleaded guilty March 13 to two felony counts of bank robbery, including the Plymouth and Roseville banks.

Smith is scheduled to begin paying restitution after his release from prison, Remillard said.
