A man who was killed in a backhoe accident on McCourtney Road was identified as Russell Jeffers, 23, of Grass Valley, Nevada County Sheriff’s Sgt. Bill Jones said Sunday.

Jeffers died Friday afternoon while working at a home site on the 15000 block of McCourtney Road for Norcal Construction of Penn Valley. Investigators said he had gotten pinned under the arm of the backhoe after walking around to the back of the equipment.

Rescue workers from the Nevada County Consolidated Fire Protection District had tried in vain to resuscitate the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jeffers’ identity had been withheld until his family could be notified.
