An auto repair shop at the Grass Valley Kmart is no more.

“We apologize for having to permanently close this location,” said the sign at the repair shop at Penske Auto Center, 111 W. McKnight Way.

Penske Auto Centers closed its automotive service centers Saturday. The company operated at 563 Kmart locations in 44 states. Penske purchased the automotive repair business in 1995.

Grass Valley Kmart managers referred questions to Penske Auto Centers. A call to Penske’s Troy, Mich., corporate headquarters was not returned. Penske has set up an 800-889-5458 phone number for customer questions.

A Penske employee who declined to be identified said the McKnight Way shop employed five people. They were still at work Tuesday doing inventory.

All the customers’ vehicles were off the premises prior to the company’s announcement, the employee said.

Penske did not say why it was closing the repair shops. Kmart is restructuring its operations after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

The closings came despite a temporary restraining order Saturday requiring Penske to keep the auto service centers open.

The order was issued in U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Northern District of Illinois.
