Authorities say drunk man wrecked his vehicle, then drunk woman came to help

It started with a drunken wreck on Gracie Road, a vehicle against an embankment late at night, authorities said.

What followed was another intoxicated driver picking up the first person and fleeing the scene before both were arrested, the California Highway Patrol said.

Craig D. Ruble, 46, and Amelia R. Barrett, 31, both of Nevada City, each face a misdemeanor DUI charge. Ruble faces an additional misdemeanor hit-and-run charge, according to the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office.

Ruble was driving a 2013 Audi Q7 around 11:30 p.m. Friday when his vehicle, in a curve, left the east side of the road. He collided with a large dirt embankment before his vehicle traveled across the road and hit another dirt embankment on the west side, CHP said.

CHP responded to the area and saw a different Audi. That 2011 Audi SUV drove around the wrecked vehicle and fled. Officers followed the Audi, stopped it and found Ruble in the passenger seat, reports state.

CHP said Barrett was driving. Also impaired by alcohol, Barrett reportedly went to the scene after Ruble’s wreck to help him.

Both were arrested and have since made bond, CHP said.
