Auburn man thrown from SUV, dies

An Auburn man was killed Friday evening after he was thrown from a sport utility vehicle near Lake of the Pines.

Wade Simmons, 24, was a passenger in a Jeep traveling south on Duggans Road at 7:54 p.m., according to the Higgins Area Fire Protection District. For an unknown reason, the driver of the Jeep, whose name was not available Sunday evening, lost control of the vehicle and the Jeep overturned at an intersection with Wolf Road.

Simmons was thrown from the Jeep and died of major head trauma, according to the fire department. The driver suffered minor injuries. Higgins, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and a Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Ambulance responded to the crash.
