ATV chase ends in arrest

A Carmichael man was arrested without incident following a short pursuit in western Nevada County on Wednesday morning.

Driving an all-terrain vehicle, Warren Gray, 29, was pursued by California Highway Patrol officers for 15 minutes on and around Highway 49.

At about 8:25 a.m., a highway patrol officer spotted the ATV driving north in the middle of Ball Road in Alta Sierra without a license plate or registration. The officer started following the ATV and attempted to stop the driver on Alta Sierra Drive.

The ATV took off toward Highway 49 at a high rate of speed, according to CHP. He went through red light and turned right onto the highway, officers said. At that point, the ATV reportedly reached speeds of 60 mph. It turned left on Pingree Road and then right onto Old Auburn Road, toward the Nevada County Fairgrounds.

Two Nevada County Sheriff’s Office cruisers attempted to meet the driver on Old Auburn just south of McCourtney Road. The driver tried to get around the officers by climbing an embankment near a residence, CHP said, but the ATV stalled.

Gray was arrested at about 8:40 a.m. on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance – amphetamines, according to police records – vehicle theft, recklessly evading a police officer, being under the influence of a controlled substance, driving with a revoked license, driving under the influence and three older charges of failing to appear in court.
