At 5:15 a.m., a decision must be made

Students at Nevada Union and Bear River high schools got an unexpected day off Friday, thanks to the vagaries of weather in the foothills.

With snow falling at 5:15 a.m. and reports of chain controls at the intersection of Highways 49 and 20, Maggie Deetz, superintendent of the Nevada Joint Union High School District, decided to cancel classes for the day.

“By the time I got to my office at 7, I called Durham (bus service) back and said, ‘Where’s the snow?'” she said Friday.

The early morning snow turned to rain by 7 a.m., so every other school district in western Nevada County held regular classes Friday.

Along with Durham Transportation’s report of foul weather, Deetz was told that a plow service contracted by the school district found snow in the NU parking lot at 4:30 a.m.

“With predictions of the snow getting worse this morning, the kids might get to school and go home,” she said Friday. “My biggest concern in making my decision was that two-thirds of our kids might drive to school.”

She said three potential snow days are built into the school year calendar, and the board of trustees will decide at a later date when to make up the day.

Deetz learned one thing from the experience – she never wants to be a weather forecaster. “Oh boy, I would never be one,” she said.
