As Oscar nominees are named, Hollywood gets the Golden gaze

Mike Getz, who probably watches more films than is good for him, believes the five movies nominated Tuesday for the Oscar in the best picture category are worthy contenders.

“I think the nominees for best picture are good,” said Getz, co-owner of Sierra Cinemas, Sutton Cinemas, and the Del Oro Theatre. “I don’t think they made any mistakes there.”

Local movie viewers can decide for themselves because “The Aviator” is currently playing at Sutton Cinemas and “Finding Neverland” is at Sierra Cinemas.

They will be joined by two other nominees starting Friday: “Million Dollar Baby” at Sutton and “Sideways” at Sierra. (The fifth nominee, “Ray,” ended its second run in Grass Valley Jan. 6.)

Getz said Oscar nominations generally help the box office of the movies selected. “My expectation is that the additional attention will give all of the films a little boost,” he said. “I expect ‘Sideways’ to do well. It’s a hilarious movie.”

“Finding Neverland” and “The Aviator” have done well in Grass Valley, Getz said. “I think the fact they were in the news because of their Golden Globe nominations helped,” he said. “Both of them are very entertaining movies that appeal to everybody.”

“Ray” had a good five-week run that started Oct. 29, and was brought back for another week on Dec. 31 after it was nominated for a Golden Globe, he said.

“But word-of-mouth is the biggest thing that effects our business,” Getz said. “If people like the movie, they tell their friends. That’s what brings people in more than anything.”
