Nevada City Winery picked up six medals – including one gold – at the 2004 California State Fair commercial wine competition, fair officials announced Thursday. Two wines from Nevada County’s Double Oak Vineyards and Winery and one from Iron Mountain Vineyards also were honored.

Nevada City Winery won a gold medal and the Best of Class Sierra Foothills appellation for its 2001 Zinfandel. The winery’s 2003 Alpenglow blush also won a Best of Class appellation. Nevada City’s 2002 Cabernet Franc, 2002 Syrah and 2002 Gewurztraminer also won bronze medals.

Double Oak’s 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon was awarded a silver medal, and its 2001 Zinfandel received a bronze. Iron Mountain received a bronze for its 2001 Syrah.

A record total of 2,926 wines were entered by 596 wineries in this year’s competition, according to fair officials. Sixteen panels of four judges evaluated the wines.
