Area weather expected to be cooler, wetter

Fall weather is finally approaching Nevada County, with cooler temperatures starting this weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

Rainfall is expected today with a chance of thunderstorms and an accumulation of about one-tenth to one-half an inch of rain, said Jim Mathews, meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Sacramento.

The rain will end late tonight, and the highs are expected to be 60 for today, 68 Sunday and low to mid-70s throughout the week, Mathews said, which are slightly below average temperatures.

“The typical normal for that area should be upper 70s for Grass Valley, so temperatures are a little bit cooler,” he said.

Highs of low to mid-70s are expected next week, with an influx of northeast winds later in the week, Mathews said, adding cool temperatures should last for a while.

“It certainly doesn’t look like there are any big heat waves,” he said.

“It is kind of looking like some possible windy conditions that can dry fuels out and create some fire weather conditions, but the system may also bring some rain to the Sierra. We have to wait and see, but it definitely looks like Thursday and Friday will be dry, with Thursday the windier day.”

The weather can be attributed to a system from the Pacific moving over the area, which originated from the northeastern Pacific Gulf of Alaska, Mathews said.

“It has some cool air associated with it, so it will drop our temperatures a little.”
