Area manufacturing jobs increase in May

Manufacturing jobs continued to show impressive gains in May in a Nevada County jobs market that has showed little change over the past year, according to statistics released Monday by the state Employment Development Department.

Employment in the county totaled 28,650 in May, a 1.1 percent increase over April but down 0.8 percent from the year-earlier period. The unemployment rate was 4.4 percent vs. 6.8 percent in the state.

A total of 1,960 people were working in manufacturing jobs in May, a 7.7 percent increase from the year-earlier period. Statewide, manufacturing jobs declined 1.5 percent.

“Manufacturing is very good,” said Mary Mahoney, area labor market consultant for the state, adding that local business leaders look at manufacturing jobs when assessing local economic progress.

Mahoney said Nevada County continues to add year-round jobs instead of the seasonal work that was typical of the local economy in the past. She pointed out that Nevada County’s unemployment rate is ranked the state’s 10th best, better than El Dorado County (16th) and Placer County (11th), which have outranked the county in the past.
