Area manufacturing jobs continue to increase

Manufacturing jobs continued to fuel job growth in western Nevada County in September, with employment up a slight 140 jobs to 29,240, according to the state Employment Development Department.

Unemployment in the county was 3.7 percent, well below the state average of 5.7 percent and tied for sixth lowest in the state.

While down slightly from August, manufacturing jobs totaled 1,940 in September, a 7.2 percent increase over the year-earlier period, according to state statistics.

The biggest decline came in state government employment, which dropped 16.7 percent to 550 workers from a year earlier.

The drop reflects a state government hiring freeze that has been in effect for the past year, according to Mary Mahoney, a labor market consultant for EDD. Workers who retire or leave their jobs aren’t being replaced in most state departments, she said.
