Area congressman writes letters in support of Sutherland and Bedwell

U.S. Congressman John Doolittle has weighed in on the Nevada County supervisors’ race.

The Republican political heavyweight from Rocklin wrote letters that recently were mailed to voters in their districts supporting candidates Robin Sutherland and Drew Bedwell.

“Nevada County is at a crossroads … The liberal majority on the Board of Supervisors have undertaken an aggressive political and policy turn to the Far Left and, as such, have left many without a voice,” said the one-page mailing, paid for by the Cedar Ridge-based Nevada County Citizens for Responsible Government.

A Placer County Democrat said Doolittle influences local elections through donations made by the Superior California State Leadership political action committee.

Placer County Supervisor Rex Bloomfield said that during the 2000 election, $64,000 was donated to his opponent, Bruce Kranz, by the PAC.

Bloomfield said Doolittle has raised money for the PAC, Doolittle’s campaign treasurer is the PAC’s treasurer, and the PAC supports candidates whom Doolittle supports.

“(Doolittle) is attempting to buy the seats so he can control the vote in local government,” Bloomfield said.

Doolittle spokesman Richard Robinson said Doolittle has the right and obligation to support good candidates.

“The congressman would like to see good, pro-business elected officials in this region,” Robinson said. “He donates money to candidates all the time.”

However, Robinson denied that Doolittle has made any financial donations to Nevada County candidates. “Not to my knowledge,” he said. “He hasn’t done so, so far.”
