Applications open for Richardson award honoring female volunteers

The Soroptimist International clubs of Grass Valley, Nevada City and Sierra foothills are offering the annual Violet Richardson Award, a recognition program for young women ages 14-17 engaged in volunteer action within their communities or schools.

“This is the award for a young woman who may not be an academic star or most likely to succeed but goes above and beyond doing more than what is asked with her volunteering,” said Sharon O’Hara, youth outreach coordinator for Soroptimist International of Grass Valley.

Each year, Soroptimist clubs honor girls who donate their time and energy to causes that help the community. The award is named for the first president of the first Soroptimist club in 1921, whose motto was, “It’s what you do that counts.”

Each club will select a winner from the applications received from western Nevada County residents. Each of the three winners are eligible to receive from $100 to $250 each for themselves and a matching amount for the nonprofit for which she volunteers and will be honored in 2013 by the clubs. Club-level winners then become eligible to compete at the district level and the six district-level winners are honored at the annual Founder Region Conference, where the regional winner is announced.

The region winner is then one of 28 Soroptimist International of the Americas finalists, one of whom will receive a $2,500 contribution to her volunteer organization.

Applicants must determine eligibility, complete the application, obtain two references and email to applications@soroptimist.org.

“It gives us a chance to see why she’s doing it and why she wants to do more than asked and what impact the money would have on whatever organization she’s volunteering for,” O’Hara said.

The application deadline is Dec. 1, and the application is online through the Soroptimist website at http://www.soroptimist.org/awards/apply.html.
