Anniversary fete for tribe thrift store

The Tsi-Akim Maidu tribe will celebrate its one-year anniversary at its headquarters in Nevada City this Sunday.

The celebration will be held from noon to 5 p.m. in the tribe’s thrift store at 548 Searls Ave. and will feature music, Indian tacos and a half-off sale on all merchandise in the store.

“It’s something we wanted to thank the community for, for supporting us,” said tribal chairman Don Ryberg.

The tribe moved from its previous Grass Valley office a year ago, to open a thrift store in Nevada City and gain more visibility from the public, said tribal chairman Don Ryberg.

“It’s holding its own and pays for rent, utilities and gives a little bit back – not much, but a little bit,” Ryberg said.

The tribe has now outgrown the store and adjoining 8 foot by 12 foot office and is looking for another location that will hold more donations, Ryberg said.

“People come to donate and we don’t have room. We need to accommodate that,” Ryberg said.

The tribe has 174 members and is seeking federal recognition through a long process that requires proving ancestry linked to the tribe.

“Maybe someday we’ll get federal recognition and we’ll get a nicer, bigger office. That’s kind of why we keep hanging on,” Ryberg said.
