The Beam Easy Living Center of Grass Valley is the $5000 first place winner of the “KenDucky Derby,” the 19th Annual 49er Rotary Gold Country Duck Race, held on Saturday on Deer Creek in Nevada City.

Company owners Bob and Julie Medlyn donated their winnings to Anew Day Counseling Service in Grass Valley, in memory of the late Michael Bratton II.

As a member of 49er Rotary, Bob Medlyn was eligible to buy entry tickets for the duck race but cannot personally win the race. Members must designate a non-profit beneficiary when they purchase their tickets.

The ticket purchased by Beam Easy Living Center matched the number of the racing duck that emerged from a field of about 8,000 ducks to take top honors in annual event, which is held as part of Nevada City’s Constitution Day weekend celebration.

Joann DeSena of Nevada City won the $1,000 runner-up prize and Brian Powell of Grass Valley placed third, winning $500. Many other cash and merchandise prizes were also awarded. QI Medical, Inc. of Nevada City was the winner of the sponsor’s race.

The duck race is sponsored by the 49er Breakfast Rotary Club of Nevada City. The race is the club’s largest annual fundraiser, providing financial assistance to numerous school, youth and community groups.
