All green thumbs? Contest for scholastic garden builders

Nevada County officials are looking for student gardeners to participate in a contest to find the county’s best demonstration garden.

Nevada County Recycles, Full Circle Demonstration Garden and Kathy Irving are inviting Nevada County schools to participate in a contest to create a ‘Seed of Life’ garden and composting area at their sites. This program has been developed in accordance with wellness policy goals for the Nevada County school districts.

A seed of life garden design is a self-sufficiency start-up garden, and is intended to be used as an outdoor classroom. The pathways are perfect for separating the students while maintaining the attention of the group.

Four concentric rings of planting beds host flowers, culinary plants, therapeutic herbs, and food. Three winning schools will receive all the materials and support they need to create a fundraiser to finance their garden as well as enough funds to tithe bricks to another school for their garden.

Very importantly, they will also receive expert gardening guidance. Nevada County Recycles is requesting schools send in their applications by Nov. 5.
