A weekend full of events blends Tahoe’s history and future

Visitors and locals that travel along Lake Tahoe’s West Shore this Memorial Day Weekend could see live jazz, a brand new museum or seaplanes landing belly-first on the water.

The West Shore Association has collaborated with several business owners, restaurants and organizations from Fanny Bridge to Emerald Bay to bring a four-day long series of events, traditionally opening the season summer fun at Lake Tahoe.

“People come up and they get their homes ready for the summertime. It is sort of like a first run of the season,” said Gary Chaney, president of the West Shore Association. “We’ve always had a lot of things happening during the Memorial Day weekend. What we wanted to do is get them all under one umbrella. “

Opening Day at the Lake kicks off today at 8 a.m. with the West Shore Clean-up, sponsored by Homewood Mountain Resort, and progresses north to rustic Sunnyside Resort for its popular, lake-side deck-opening party.

Other events will occur throughout the weekend, capping with a sea-plane fly-by parade at 1 p.m. Monday.

This year’s events include the grand opening of the Tahoe Maritime Museum’s new building.

After a two-year capital campaign, workers broke ground in 2007 on what is now a 5,800-square-foot steel-and-wood structure reminiscent of a large boat house.

Founded in 1987 by five enthusiasts, the collection did not include its first boat until 2001, museum Director of Education and Outreach Nicole Cheslock said.

“The Shanghai,” found in 400 feet of water, dates to the 1890s and is one of the many historic artifacts visitors will find during events planned there on Saturday and Sunday.
