A mural to help remember Summer Thyme

Sitting on the back porch of Summer Thyme’s bakery last spring, Liz Swindell commented to owner Amy Cooke on the drabness of the coffee spot’s back wall.

“We were sitting out here and thinking it really didn’t fit,” Swindell said.

So the two went to work, planning out a “French sunflower landscape” mural to brighten the look, Swindell, a Summer Thyme’s employee, said.

Swindell sketched the mural’s outline, which began to take shape over the past week.

A vibrant blue sky contrasting the green stalks, bright yellow petals and brown centers of the sunflowers is now coming to life on the back of the Colfax Ave. bakery.

“We wanted something cheery and bright, that’s the whole idea,” Swindell said. “It should be really nice during the winter when it’s gray and gloomy.”

Swindell and friends Heather Parker and Punit Gandhi, visiting from Oakland, started in on the design and invited anyone who wanted in to join.

“It’s a nice break from the city,” Gandhi said as he swirled brown paint into the center of one of the sunflowers.

A small girl helped to paint some of the smaller petals as her parents walked out with their coffee Monday morning.

“We had another helper earlier today and we’re getting some more after they finish up breakfast,” Swindell said Monday. “We want anyone who’d like to come help out, especially the people who eat here all the time, so they can leave their mark on it.”

The work should last well into the week, Swindell said.

Summer Thyme’s is located on 421 Colfax Ave. in Grass Valley.
