A letter to the governor

Casey Tomasi, Sierra Solar Systems
of Grass Valley

In regards to the CSI (California Solar Initiative) program, the tiered structure has dropped to 65 cents per watt installed which is insubstantial to most consumers.

This is because the time and effort that it takes to reserve a spot, process the paperwork and acquire the calculations required is not worth the actual rebate.

For our customers at Sierra Solar Systems in Grass Valley, it is a wash at best.

And to think that the rate is going to be nearly halved for the next tier makes me think that it won’t serve its purpose as an incentive any longer.

I am writing to suggest a more progressive approach. I find it interesting what is happening in L.A. with a local coalition developing a regional feed in tariff.

Can you imagine the amount of solar that would be developed statewide with a well-researched and developed incentive? There are so many businesses and investors on the edge of their seat waiting for a good reason to make a substantial investment in solar.

I would like to see our Renewable Portfolio Standard met, and then some, sooner than later. My personal view is based on a more environmental perspective; but to achieve a “greener” California, it must also be financially worthwhile for the consumer.

So let’s help the consumer get the solar up and into the sun so we can enjoy knowing that we are helping the environment, creating jobs and actually spending our money wisely.
