86th Waffle Sale precedes Lent

The St. Catherine’s Guild of Emmanuel Episcopal Church will hold its 86th annual Shrove Tuesday Waffle Sale in its parish hall from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 12.

Cost is $4 for all the waffles you can eat and $6.50 for waffles, ham and eggs. Preschool children eat for $2.25.

Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday, which is the beginning of the 40 days of Lent. The period of fasting and self-denial to correspond with Jesus’ 40 days in the wilderness. Shrove Tuesday is an occasion for feasting and merrymaking in anticipation of Lent sacrifices.

In 1916, eight women of Emmanuel Church met with then-rector, the Rev. Bert Foster, who told them of the English tradition of serving pancakes on Shrove Tuesday. Not having the means to make pancakes, the women used a waffle iron supplied by one of the church women, and the event became known as the Waffle Sale.

Proceeds help support the church’s community outreach programs, such as Interfaith Food Ministry, Alzheimer’s Support Group, Manzanita Family Center, Ladies Relief Society, Emergency Coalition and Area 4 Agency on Aging’s Senior Outreach Program. The funds are also used to purchase gifts for shut-ins, especially at Christmas.

Reservations are advisable for groups of four or more and can be made by calling 273-7396. The church is at 235 S. Church St., Grass Valley.
