7 honored for efforts in conservation

The Nevada County Resource Conservation District recognized seven individuals for their conservation efforts in agriculture, fire safety and habitat restoration.

Ananda Dhira, a religious community located adjacent to the South Yuba River State Park at Bridgeport, was named conservationists of the year. The community restored a riparian area on the lower reaches of Kentucky Creek.

David Vertin, board president of the conservation district, received the director of the year award. Rita de Quercus was given a special recognition award for her leadership with the local food movement and for supporting agriculture.

Joanne Drummond, executive director of the Fire Safe Council of Nevada County was also given a special recognition award for her leadership role in fire safe activities and program development.

Manuel Manriquez, owner and operator of M&M Reforestation received the conservation services award for improving forest health on steep slopes by planting millions of seedlings each year.

Jim Tryon received the Rangeland Conservationist Award. He and his wife Diana own 363 acres under the Williamson Act where the couple raises cattle and has developed wildlife ponds and reduced invasive brush and increased range productivity.

Jim Bratt of North San Juan won the forest conservationist award for improving 175 forested acres by using goats for brush management, forest thinning and pruning while maintaining wildlife habitats.
