4-H programs to be cut after school year

The 4-H Afterschool Child Care Program Board of Directors has announced that all 16 of its programs will be canceled during the next few months.

The announcement was made in a letter from board members to parents, dated May 23.

The programs in Alta Sierra, Cottage Hill, Margaret G. Scotten, and Williams Ranch schools will close on the last day of school, the letter stated.

Summer child care, however, will be available at Hennessy, Oak Tree, Pleasant Ridge and Ready Springs schools. Services at these sites will end Aug. 18, 2006.

In the letter, the board members also assured the parents that Proposition 49 – the initiative passed by voters in 2002 – is due to be enacted sometime after July 1.

The proposition increases state grant funds for before/after school programs and makes every public elementary and middle school eligible for after-school grants ranging from $50,000 to $75,000.

It also provides priority for additional funding to schools with predominantly low-income students. The proposition gives priority to schools already receiving grants and requires increasing expenditures only if state revenues grow.

The letter said that the board hoped the new funding from Proposition 49 would make before- and after-school day care accessible to more people.
