3 little pigs, 3 bunnies stolen from fair found safe

Three little pigs and three bunnies found in a cardboard box near the intersection of Rough and Ready Highway and Bitney Springs Road on Monday could be the ones stolen from the county fair during the weekend, said Nevada County Sheriff Keith Royal.

At about 3 p.m. Monday, the Sheriff’s Office received a phone call from someone who said they had found the critters in a springs area near the intersection.

“Apparently they were passing by and heard the animals,” said Sheriff Keith Royal.

Early Saturday morning after the fair had closed, a rabbit was taken from its cage located in the 4-H section of the fairgrounds. Two more rabbits and three one-week-old piglets were taken the following day somewhere between 1:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m.

The animals found on Monday were placed in the county’s animal shelter until owners could be contacted and the animals identified, Royal said.

“It’s kind of a happy ending,” he said.
