28 candidates apply for GVSD’s top job

Local school officials are sorting through 28 applications from people hoping for the chance to replace Grass Valley School District Superintendent Jon Byerrum.

Byerrum is set to retire after this school year.

Applications came in from a wide variety of potential replacements, said GVSD Trustee Tom Pettit. The deadline to apply for the position was Friday, Feb. 26.

Trustees are working with the Nevada County Superintendent of Schools Office to sort through the candidates.

“Toward the end of the month, we’ll move ahead with sorting through the applications and start to do some interviews,” Pettit said.

They have not decided how many applicants would interview for the position, Pettit said.

Officials of the K-8 district hope to have a new superintendent in place by June.

Pettit commended Byerrum for his work with the district.

Byerrum has led the district for 16 years, after spending five years as the district’s assistant superintendent.

“His experience will certainly be missed,” Pettit said. “Not just here, but throughout the county.”
