21-year-old man held on rape charge

A young Nevada County man has been arrested on suspicion of rape after a month-long investigation by Grass Valley Police.

Alexander C. Napier, 21, was incarcerated at the county jail Friday on a $100,000 bail.

Capt. Rex Marks said the case could be difficult, because the victim was not conscious at the time of the alleged act. But physical evidence and the possibility of witnesses were enough to get a warrant for Napier’s arrest.

Police have been looking for Napier since Aug. 16 when the victim showed up at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital and said she had been sexually assaulted, Marks said. Napier’s booking sheet listed a Nevada City address, but he also stayed part-time at a home on Second Street in Grass Valley, where the alleged crime occurred.

On Wednesday, “We got an anonymous call advising us he was back in the 200 block of Second Street,” Marks said. Police went to the house and arrested Napier without incident.

“The investigation is ongoing with additional witnesses,” Marks said. Some of those witnesses came forward after Napier’s arrest and more are being sought.
