2006 election season to open
Incumbents currently dominate the Nevada County elections scene – just seven days before the season officially opens with the first day of filing Feb. 13.
A handful of new contenders have pulled paperwork, and all are for positions in which the incumbent has announced he or she is not seeking re-election.
Three candidates have stepped forward for the district attorney seat, which is being vacated by longtime office-holder Michael Ferguson. Cliff Newell, Jim Phillips and David Silber have all pulled their initial paperwork.
Raymond Shine and Thomas Anderson will vie for Carl Bryan’s seat on the Superior Court bench. Hank Weston has announced plans to run for the District 4 Supervisor’s seat, which is now held by Robin Sutherland, who will not run again.
Four seats are open in Nevada City, including two City Council seats. Both incumbents – Kerry Arnett and Conley Weaver – have announced intentions to run. City Clerk Cathy Wilcox-Barnes and City Treasurer Neil Locke are also both up for re-election; neither have yet made their election plans public.
Clerk-Recorder Kathleen Smith said Friday she was surprised that more candidates have not stepped forward to pick up their in-lieu petitions, which enable them to gather signatures that offset the cost of their filing fee.
Each signature is worth about 25 cents, she said, yet is a “drop in the bucket” when compared to the cost of running a campaign, which is why more candidates might not have stepped forward.
Petitions must be turned in Feb. 23.
Smith said many recent calls to her office are regarding questions about how to get an initiative on the ballot. She said this information, along with upcoming dates, candidate requirements, and other important election information is available at http://www.mynevadacounty.com/elections on the Web.
