2 hurt in afternoon crash on Hwy. 49

A head-on collision on Highway 49 south of Grass Valley on Friday injured two and tied up traffic in both directions during the afternoon commute.

The accident occurred at about 4:30 p.m. near Christian Life Way. A driver in a pickup reportedly struck a car head-on, said Jim Turner, a captain with the Nevada County Consolidated Fire District.

The driver of the small sedan, whose name was unavailable, was airlifted to Sutter Roseville Medical Center after suffering injuries to his lower legs and chest.

Firefighters had to remove the sedan’s roof to rescue the driver.

The pickup driver, whose name was also unavailable, was transported to Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital with a possibly broken ankle, Turner said.

He said emergency crews also had to use the Jaws of Life to help free the driver of the pickup, which ended up on a hillside along the road.
