10/10/10 Styrofoam collection coming up

Keep Styrofoam packaging out of landfills on Sunday with the 10/10/10 Styrofoam sweep.

As part of the 350.org 10/10/10 movement to bring carbon dioxide back to healthy levels in the atmosphere, Tanglewood Forest Gallery owner Anita Wald-Tuttle wants Grass Valley businesses to bag foam blocks used for shipping for pickup.

“In a landfill, it takes 700 years for that block of foam to off-gas and disappear,” Wald-Tuttle said. “We’re encouraging people to put it in black bags between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Sunday.”

She plans to collect as much foam as possible, and give it to businesses that can reuse it for their shipping, she added.

While this is a one-time event, Wald-Tuttle said she hopes that it can grow into a regular practice, expanding into Nevada City and other surrounding areas.
