$1,000 reward for ‘Fedora bandit’ info

The FBI is offering a $1,000 reward for tips leading to the capture of the man who has robbed three branches of the Bank of the West in Kings Beach, South Lake Tahoe and Grass Valley the past three months.

In each heist, the man wore a brown fedora, dark sunglasses and a fake beard. Agents from the bureau’s Sacramento field office described the robber as a white male with a fake goatee who is about 40 to 50 years old, with gray or salt-and-pepper hair and about 5-foot-9-inches to 6 feet tall, with a slim build.

In each robbery – the most recent of which occurred Monday, March 8, in Kings Beach – the man approached the teller counter, brandished a handgun and made verbal demands for money. He used a black, eco-friendly type bag found in many supermarkets to deposit undisclosed amounts of cash.

In one of the robberies, the release states he made an attempt to disguise his voice by speaking through clenched teeth.

“Our agents are working on a number or angles right now,” said agent Steve Dupre, adding the bureau is working with the Grass Valley Police Department, South Lake Tahoe Police Department and Placer County Sheriff’s Department.

Anyone with information should contact the Sacramento field office at (916) 481-9110 or the Placer County Crime Stoppers hotline at (800) 923-8191 if informants wish to remain anonymous.

Monday’s robbery is the sixth in the area since December.
