Lives Lived: Stephen Fitch

Stephen Henry Fitch died Jan. 31 in Maui, Hawaii. He was 84.

A service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, at Nevada City Methodist Church.

He was born Aug. 19, 1925, in Hollywood to Stephen B. Fitch and Lilian O. Fitch. He served in the United States Army in Europe during World War II.



Mr. Fitch married his childhood sweetheart and the love of his life, Joan Lousie LaFehr, on Aug. 10, 1945, in Alhambra, Calif.

He earned a degree in physics from the University of California, Los Angeles, and was a career aerospace physicist-engineer. Upon retirement, he settled in Nevada City.




He was a member of the Grass Valley Male Voice Choir and Music in the Mountains.

Family was first in his life, but his other interests included music, astronomy, gardening, model trains and protecting the environment. His love of the ocean and whales made Maui a favorite vacation spot.

Mr. Fitch is survived by his wife Joan LaFehr; sons, Stephen Fitch, Mark Fitch and Timothy Fitch; daughters, Caryn Fitch, Robin Brake and Susan Fitch; and 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
