Lives Lived: Hipolito Martinez

Hipolito “Polo” Aguilar Martinez of Grass Valley died peacefully February 10 at Golden Empire Convalescent Hospital in Grass Valley. He was 83.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. March 13 at Peace Lutheran Church in Grass Valley.

Mr. Martinez was born February 12, 1926, in Los Angeles, to Hipolito Martinez and Filomena Aguilar.



He served in the U.S. Navy and earned a bachelor’s degree in theology. He married his wife, Harriett, on March 20, 1946, in Los Angeles.

Mr. Martinez worked in automotive body repair for many years. He was a minister and missionary to Mexico with his wife Harriett.




He enjoyed painting, ceramics, playing bingo and bunko, travel and classical guitar.

Mr. Martinez is survived by his daughter, Heidi Cunningham of Grass Valley.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Harriett; sisters, Tonya Ortega and Josie Gutierrez, and brother, Tony Martinez.
