Lives Lived: Emily Gilman

Emily “Jimmie” Gilman died peacefully March 29 in Grass Valley with family by her side. She was 87.

A private memorial service was held.

She was born Sept. 10, 1922, in Bend, Ore., to Nary and Avon Kittleson. She attended two years of college at Oregon State.



She married John Gilman Nov. 30, 1943, in Bend and was a homemaker.

Mrs. Gilman was a member of Sierra Presbyterian Church, Roadrunners, Nevada County Growers Market, Pi Beta Phi Sorority and Nordic Ski Club.




She enjoyed traveling, wintering in Cabo San Lucas, skiing, sewing, gardening, refinishing antiques, socializing and, most of all, family.

Mrs. Gilman is survived by her husband, John Gilman of Grass Valley; children, Diann (Les) Roddick of Shandon, Calif., Jim (Linda) Gilman of Yreka, John (Lorna) Gilman of San Jose, David (Liz) Gilman of Santa Ynez, and Debbie (Paul) Stackhouse of Nevada City; grandchildren, Trever, Will and Nolan Roddick, Mark and DeeDee Gilman, Jenny Gilman, Cole Gilman, Annika and Stefan Stackhouse; seven great-grandchildren;

She was preceded in death by her parents, Nary and Avon Kittleson; and sisters, Helen Swan and Eva Plummer.

The family extends a special thank you to the caring and committed staff at Quail Ridge Assisted Living, Highgate Senior Living and Hospice of the Foothills.
