Lives Lived: Elaine DeLeeuw

Bertha “Elaine” Sorensen DeLeeuw, 92, a Penn Valley resident for more than 30 years, died Feb. 24 in San Jose.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 6, at the Penn Valley Cemetery.

Born in Ephriam, Sanpete, Utah on Sept. 25, 1917, Mrs. DeLeeuw was the fourth of eight children born to Nettie Mae Miller and Thomas B. Sorensen.



She moved to the Bay Area when she married Andy DeLeeuw in 1936 and worked for the Leonard Fruit Packing Company for many years. She enjoyed gardening, traveling, painting, crocheting and quilting. In 1975, Mr. and Mrs. DeLeeuw retired to Penn Valley where they built a home. Andy DeLeeuw died in 1987. Elaine continued to reside in Penn Valley until 2006.

They have two sons, Richard DeLeeuw of Morgan Hill and Larry DeLeeuw, of Lovelock, Nev.; seven grandchildren, Russell DeLeeuw, Lisa DeLeeuw, Terry DeLeeuw, Deborah Biladeau, Dave DeLeeuw, Darin DeLeeuw and Derek DeLeeuw, and five great-grandchildren, Samuel, Joshua, Rebekah, Eli and Ava Blue.
