‘Let’s Help Ourselves First’ mentality is disgusting

Recently there have been a couple of letters that have suggested that U.S. citizens should not be giving to charities for earthquake victims in Haiti. They say that we should take care of our own first. This implies that people in need born within the U.S. are more deserving, than those who were not born here.

Since the degree of need is so much greater in many parts of the world, it also implies that the need for better housing for homeless people in the U.S. is more important than the starvation deaths of children in the Third World.

I hope one of you will take the time to write in and explain how this works for you. I, personally, think it’s disgusting.

More broadly on charities, my guess is that 60 to 70 percent of all “charitable” giving goes to local causes. By this, I mean that somebody comes to your door, or waits outside the market. You give them money, and you get to feel better about yourself, because you helped build a youth center, or helped support drug rehabilitation. These charities get your money first because they are in your face.

So, the next time you find yourself talking to some earnest person wanting money to save lost pets, ask yourself how many dozens of children starved to death in the Third World during the time you had that conversation.
