Lester Marshall

Services were held July 19 at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard, Kan., for Lester Carl Marshall. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 27, at Sierra Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Nevada City. Mr. Marshall passed away July 13 from lung cancer. He was 86.

Mr. Marshall was born in 1921 to Riley and Theo Marshall in West Mineral, Kan.

On Aug. 18, 1940, he married Viola Hinkle. Mr. Marshall farmed in Cherokee, Kan., and operated a steam shovel in the coal mines there before moving to California in 1946. After living and raising his family in California for 56 years where he worked as a general contractor, he retired to Girard, Kan., at the age of 80.

Mr. Marshall is survived by daughters Carol Marshall of Grass Valley, Joyce Wisecarver of Antioch and Joan Spraggins of Penn Valley; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brothers Ray Marshall of Pittsburg, Kan., and Dean Marshall of Fort Scott, Kan.; and sister, Ann Martens of Pittsburg, Kan. He was preceded in death by his wife, Viola; parents Riley and Theo Marshall; brother, Charles Marshall; and sisters Xenia Allen and Virginia Chance.
