Learning digest 2/11/08

Nevada County’s top math students from 22 public, private and charter schools competed in the countywide Mathematics Tournament on Feb. 5 and 7 at the Miners Foundry, Nevada City.

The two-day event with 150 participants was sponsored by Telestream Inc. Joe Crain, a previous participant in the tournament, served as master of ceremonies.

The competition consisted of problem solving, geometry and computation for grades 5 through 8, with special topics for seventh and eighth graders.



• The overall winners were:

Grade 5: Jack Herron, Alta Sierra School. Grade 6: Alex Dunn, Bridge Charter/Nevada City Home Study. Grade 7: Miles Baker, Seven Hills School; Tyler Hyjewski, Magnolia School. Grade 8: Jean Kono, Ready Springs School.




• Problem Solving:

Grade 5: Anna Wunsch, Deer Creek School; Grade 6: Ryan Silva, Magnolia School. Grade 7: Tyler Hyjewski, Magnolia School. Grade 8: Jean Kono, Ready Springs School.

• Geometry:

Grade 5: Jack Herron, Alta Sierra School. Grade 6: Chandler Heppe, Seven Hills School. Grade 7: Tyler Hyjewski, Magnolia School; Mitchell Raab, Magnolia School. Grade 8: Jean Kono, Ready Springs School.

• Computation:

Grade 5: Jack Herron, Alta Sierra School. Grade 6: Alexander Dunn, Bridge Charter Home Study; Abby Winquest, Chicago Park. Grade 7: Miles Baker, Seven Hills School. Grade 8: Jean Kono, Ready Springs School.

• Special Topics:

Grade 7: Miles Baker, Seven Hills School; James Verch, Sierra Montessori Academy; Zane Weinberger, Seven Hills School. Grade 8: Jean Kono, Ready Springs School; Stefan Stackhouse, Seven Hills School.

Alexis Nicolai, a senior of Nevada Union High School, is raising funds for the Andy Straatemeier Memorial Scholarship by hosting a dance performance at 7 p.m. Feb. 20 at the Center for the Arts, Grass Valley.

Performers include local artists, AirAligned and dancers from Sierra Dance Institute.

Tickets cost $10 in advance and $15 at the door.

The event honors the contributions of the late Andy Straatemeier to the community.

Straatemeier was the owner and coach of Stellar Gymnastics in Grass Valley. She also was nursing supervisor at the Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital, coordinator of the Breast Imaging Center, surgical liaison for outpatient surgery and public health coordinator and emergency preparedness facilitator for Nevada County.

The Andy Straatemeier Memorial Scholarship will benefit a Nevada Union High School graduate majoring in athletic coaching or teaching.
