On March 24, the Nevada County Charter of the Association of California School Administrators recognized area educators as administrator/leaders of the year in several categories.
Maggie Deetz, superintendent of the Nevada Joint Union High School District, was named Nevada County Administrator of the Year for 2004-2005. Winners were also announced in the following categories:
Elementary principal: Mike McGarr, principal, Deer Creek Elementary School, Nevada City School District
Co-administrator: Jim Nieto, assistant principal, Bear River High School, Nevada Joint Union High School District.
Business services administrator: Larry Pastore, Twin Ridges Elementary School District.
Special recognition for retirees: Jim Meshwert, superintendent, Pleasant Ridge Union School District; Carol Judd, principal, Bell Hill School, Grass Valley School District, and Kevin Ramirez, retired, Sierra Community College District.
Volunteers are needed to help Washington School prepare for its 100th birthday celebration June 4, 2005. Former teachers, employees, students and the public are invited to attend the event. There will be speeches by Terry McAteer, Nevada County Superintendent of Schools, Twin Ridges Elementary School District Superintendent Stan Miller, former students and teachers. Dakota Sid Clifford will perform live music.

Kindergarten registration for students planning to attend schools in the Pleasant Ridge Union School District begins soon. Those who will be 5 years old on or before Dec. 2 are eligible to register for kindergarten.
Parent orientation meetings will be held April 11.
The meetings are at 6:30 p.m. for students planning to attend Alta Sierra School and at 7 p.m. for those who plan to attend Cottage Hill and Pleasant Ridge schools.
Parents are asked to attend the meetings without children.
Registration appointments will be set at that time.
Early registration for those attending Pleasant Ridge and Alta Sierra schools will be April 12. Registration for those attending Cottage Hill is scheduled for April 13.

Candice Coursey of Grass Valley was named to the Dean’s List at the Decker School of Nursing at Binghamton University in New York for the fall 2004 semester.

Grass Valley will get a brief respite from the heat this week, though highs in the upper 90s will return by this weekend, the National Weather Service said.
